The Week In February With Valentine's Day In It

Here's another great sunset for all my fans out there (both of you). This is Egmont Key in Tampa Bay, Florida. You can see the small lighthouse out on the island, and if you look closely, it's lit! I don't know how many pictures I had to take to get one where the light was pointed in the right direction. There are no bridges to this island, you have to take a ferry to visit it. This shot was taken from Ft. Desoto, which has been very well documented here on the blog.

  1. You forgot to mention that the neatest thing about Egmont key is that it's shifting... east I think. The beach on the gulf side is eroding, and forts that once stood as defense against foes are now 300+ feet in the ocean.

We used to climb up and jump off these as kids. When I was younger, you could climb from the beach directly onto the fort. Now, 20 years later, you have to swim out and climb up, but it's still pretty awesome.

On the flipside of the island, where the lighthouse is, the island has grown and the lighthouse is creeping inland.

I think now the island is used to house pilots that take over for the captains of big incoming ships and bring them into the nearby bay and ports. (I think one of these is the guy who ran into the Skyway.)

    Fantastic picture. Thanks!

  2. Well, that's all pretty much true. But there are areas of the island that are relatively stable, and there are fort sections on those parts. I remember several years ago seeing footage on TV where they blew up several sections of the old fort that were in danger of collapse. I hope to get out to the island sometime soon and post some pictures.
